Pushing it up for mental health

LIFELINE Regional SA and Far West NSW are seeking Broken Hill residents to participate in the Push-up Challenge this June, to help fundraise to support the mental health and wellbeing of residents in the Far West and regional South Australia.

Participants will perform 3214 push-ups over 23 days in June to remember the 3214 lives lost to suicide in Australia in 2023.

Lifeline Regional SA and Far West NSW Marketing Coordinator, Ruby Eckert, said, “the Push-Up Challenge is a great opportunity for Australians to talk about their mental health, learn how to best support each other and recognise when they might need to put their own hand up for help.”

Australians from all ages are encouraged to sign up for the challenge, which will run from June 4 to 26.

Those who are intimidated by the number of push-ups required can set their own push-up goal, or alternatively do sit-ups, squares or other tailored exercises, and track their progress through a dedicated app.

Founder of the Challenge, Nick Hudson, said there were many benefits to participating in the challenge.

“The Push-Up Challenge is a fun and accessible way to improve your fitness, learn about mental health and connect with friends, family and community, all while honouring the lives tragically lost to suicide,” he said.

“Mental health challenges will affect nearly everyone at some point in their lives. The Push-Up Challenge aims to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness through education and encourage Australians to take a more proactive approach to their fitness and mental wellbeing.”

The challenge is free, and fundraising is optional.

More than 218,000 Australians are participating in 2024, raising over $12 million for mental health charities.
