Tha Boiz bring the party to Mundi

THA Boiz are no newcomers to performing on the big stage, having played multiple Mundi Mundi Bash line-ups over the years.

This year they spiced up their set with a few different song choices when they played last Wednesday afternoon.

“All of them are really new ones,” drummer Bilyara Bates said.

“We don’t know how it’s going to go down because we’ve probably been a bit more risqué this year. Over the years we’ve kind of done the classics, and we wanted to do something different. So there’s some Kendrick Lamar, Korn, Nelly, Thunder Cat. More funky kind of music. More party vibes.”

Bates said though the band loves classic pub rock too, it can be overdone.

“In Broken Hill lots of bands play like AC/DC, Cold Chisel covers, its great music but it’s the same thing,” he said.

“We want to create a space to have fun.”

Tha Boiz started in 2019 when a group of friends decided to start a party band.

“Our first show was at a backyard birthday part for our friend and local musician Aimee Volkofsky, and not long after we were asked to play the NAIDOC Ball, then the local pubs and weddings, and now we’re playing the Mundi bash with bands we grew up listening to,” Bates said.

Every band member brings their unique taste in music to their gigs and the songs they pick to play, according to Bates.

“We have very diverse musical backgrounds, with a mix of formally trained musicians and natural talent, we listen to everything from funk, rap, reggae, rock and metal so we thought let’s break the rules and do something a little bit out there and see how people react,” he said.

Bates added the band’s setup is slow but worthwhile.

“Our set up for a live show of petty tech heavy, we’re using a lot of synthesisers, keyboards, samplers, guitars and drums so setting up for a show can be a big effort,” he said.

“But it’s very rewarding.”

The band were tasked with bringing party vibes to start off the week of live music and get punters dancing, which they were happy to deliver.

“We play the kind of music you’re going to hear at a house party or late night kick-ons,” Bates said.
