From trash to treasure

PIECES from Broken Hill Art Exchange’s Waste to Art competition returned this week from Parkes, where local creatives won six category awards and two highly commended nods for works made entirely from recycled materials.

Waste to Art is a community art exhibition and competition open to all residents of the NetWaste region of New South Wales.

The Art Exchange and the local Lifeline service partnered to run Waste to Art events on behalf of Broken Hill City Council which provided funding via a Community Assistance Grant.

This year’s theme was “packaging” and artists use recycled materials to create work displayed in an exhibition at the Broken Hill Tip Shop.

Nadina Benvenisti, Broken Hill Art Exchange secretary, said the resulting pieces made in town were truly inspiring.

“Our city never ceases to amaze me with its incredible creativity and the unique ways people interpret the theme each year,” she said.

“The exhibition is a reminder of the importance of addressing the waste we create.”

Artists including Sarah Pratt, Ella Horsfall, Naomi Wild, Callaghan Shepherd, Glenda Beeston and Christina McConville all won awards at the regional final, where they works went up against other councils’ creations.
