Breast Cancer Support Group auction a big hit

THE town’s Breast Cancer Support Group held its highly anticipated auction last Friday with the event raising more than $14,000 for the charity.

The Group’s president Leeann Clogg said the event really showed how supportive the Broken Hill community is.

“We had some fantastic prizes that were donated, we had a fourteen person BBQ dinner party donated which included roast brisket, lamb, chicken, veggies, with beer and wine,” she said. “That sold for $1200.”

Ms Clogg said the group’s famous pasties were also a hot commodity at the auction.

“Three dozen of our famous pasties sold for $1000!” she said.

“What we do now is have a meeting with palliative care and oncology and ask them to put a wish list together, and then we can purchase the items on their wish list,” Ms Clogg said.

The original auction was to be held at the end of October but due to the power outage – organisers made the decision to postpone it.

“It was a tough call, and we made it late,” Ms Clogg said.

“There was so much insecurity around power, and we were worried the power would go out.

“Plus, we didn’t think it was fair on the town, there were people not being able to work and people who had lost fridges full of food.”

Ms Clogg said they didn’t want to make the event any later as it would be too close to Christmas.

She said it was a really successful night.

“There was standing room only, we all had a ball.

“The auction raised $7,364.10 and we received a donation from the Argent Street traders of 6,530.67.

“The traders all did raffles throughout October and donated that money to us – they did an amazing job.”

The big-ticket item was the quilt which was won by a Sydney man who donated the quilt back to the Support Group.

They were able to sell it for $500.

Ms Clogg said she would like to thank the Broken Hill community for their support.

“The Broken Hill community has been outstanding – they are so generous and supportive,” she said.

“We have been able to create awareness and definitely ‘Painted the Town Pink’.”
