Arts trail lights up Silver City

THE Red Dirt Blue Skies Artist Trail has seen multiple shopfronts transformed into pop up galleries this week, with local artists exhibiting their work for travellers passing through town in the lead up to the Mundi Mundi Bash.

“We have 40 local artists exhibiting across 25 venues,” Art Exchange president Susanne Rae Jones said.

“Some of them are exhibiting their art for the first time, which is very exciting!”

The works are a range of mediums including paintings, photography, ceramics, fibre arts and three dimensional installations.

“Red Dirt Blue Skies is a response to community demand for the return of the pre-COVID Desert Equinox Exhibition,” Ms Jones said.

“This exhibition is that, reimagined. We want to showcase our local artist during the peak tourism season in Broken Hill.”

Maps are available at the venues, as well was the Art Exchange, local Caravan Parks and at the visitor centre.

All venues will have QR codes for the artworks where spectators can read information about the artists and artworks, and have the option to purchase artworks.

“All the artwork is within the theme Red Dirt Blue Skies, so it’s a celebration of the Far West,” Ms Jones said.

“They relate in some fashion to life out here, either through landscapes or celebrating the people.”

Tonight (Friday), local drag queen Shelia Buffet will host a guided tour down Argent Street to see the works.

“Then we’ll go back to the exchange for a sausage sizzle, and celebrate the opening!” Ms Jones said.

The tour is free and the art trail will run until August, 29.
