WATER users and the wider community have been asked to provide feedback on the New South Wales draft water-sharing plan for the Barwon-Darling Unregulated River.
Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) executive director of water planning Giselle Howard said the plan outlines new water management rules for the next decade.
“Water-sharing plans are vital tools for managing our state’s water resources, and the Barwon-Darling water-sharing plan is no exception,” she said.
“We want to hear your feedback on the draft now so we can continue to manage the region’s water fairly and sustainably over the next 10 years.”
Ms Howard said the plan’s goal is to balance long-term environmental sustainability for the river with fair access for everybody.
“We want a plan that works well for the entire Barwon-Darling,” she said.
“Which means continuing to protect basic landholder rights, cultural needs and water for the environment.
“As well as setting limits on how much water can be taken to help ensure our rivers, aquifers and waterways remain healthy and resilient for the next generations.
“This is about making sure everyone gets their fair share while also protecting the long-term health of our water resources and the vibrant ecosystems that rely on them.”
DCCEEW staff will hold a webinar on November 28 from 12pm to 1pm, where the people can learn more about the plan and provide feedback.
On November 25 at Bourke, there will also be a chance to talk to department staff in person.
Submissions are open until 20 December and can be filled out at water.dpie.nsw.gov.au.
