Tourist Park is first choice with travellers

THE Broken Hill Tourist Park recently took home the NSW Travellers Choice Award and National Travellers Choice Award at the 2024 G’Day Parks Awards.

Co-owner Michael McIvor and his parents are well-versed in the caravan park industry, running a tourist park in Geelong before adding the Broken Hill Tourist Park to their business in 2010.

“I was in grade six when mum and dad bought the Geelong park,” Mr McIvor said.

“So I grew up in the family business of caravan parks.”

Mr McIvor and his family own two caravan parks in Broken Hill, along with a motel, and employ 35 locals.

Mr McIvor said he was thrilled with the award and recognition.

“It’s really nice to get the reward, especially for our team members who’ve been with us a long time,” he said.

“We’re owner operated here so the experience is a lot more personal.”

G’Day Parks have 330 parks in their network throughout Australia, and more than 200,000 members who vote for the Award winners each year.

“Members pay a $50 membership fee for two years, which entitles them to be a part of our loyalty program,” Mr McIvor said.

“We’re pretty much the largest regional accommodation operating group in terms of regional Australia. There’s one in Cobar, one in Mildura, and even Packsaddle are affiliates of the parks.”

Mr McIvor said even though he knows that the park may not be the best in Australia, it has a lot to offer the Far West.

“We can offer great customer service, and our purpose is to create great experiences for our guests,” he said.

“We’re always taking feedback onboard and looking to listen and improve.”

Some of these recent improvements have been two new amenities blocks, a brand new camp kitchen and a few new cabins.

Mr McIvor said it’s important to him that local tradespeople and resources are engaged with the parks renovations so that profit can be shared throughout the Broken Hill community and reinvested locally.
