The big dance beckons

BROKEN Hill’s summer season tennis season is on the verge of completion — the grand final awaits two teams.

However, there’s some catching up to do on what you’ve missed over the past two weeks.

Wednesday, Division One’s first week of finals saw Couldabeens take on Spin Doctors in the qualifying final.

With the first spot in the big dance up for grabs, Spin Doctors bolted out of the block at the start the night with Shaun Kennedy and Doug Coff downing Wayne “Air Fryer Made Easy” Lee and Jamie Passlow 7-2.

Couldabeens claimed the second opening double through Boyd Keenan and Leonie Channing 7-5 to tie the teams at a set apiece.

The game turned into Couldabeens’ favour next, with Keenan and Passlow winning their double 7-1 over Coff and Praise Ukpong.

Despite the challenge ahead Kennedy, hot off his opening set win, combined with Trevor Grillet to clench a cracking tiebreaker and it locked at 2-2 on sets.

However, Spin Doctors could not go any further into the night with Couldabeens turning up the heat to win fixture four sets 36 games to two sets 24 games.

It wasn’t doom and gloom for the Spin Doctors as they would be utilising their second chance to playoff against the winner of the night’s elimination final.

That elimination final was contested by Macblack and Feauties.

While Feauties displayed fierce competition and stiflingly handy skills, Macblack ended up winning the night 5-39 to 1-27.

Jack Woods and Luke Barnes won all their respective sets including when they played together, beating Joe “The Pitt” Worgan and Terry Hibberd 7-3.

Feauties’ only set came through Brady Wauchope and James “Lastname Omitted” besting Ash Mason and Ryan Lewis 7-4.

Flash forward one week: the preliminary final was set with the elimination-surviving Macblack and the unqualified Spin Doctors.

Joining Shaun Kennedy on the Spin Doctors team for that match was Mackenzie Niarros, Jono Hull and Tom Kennedy.

As for Macblack, Ash Mason stepped out of the squad and in came Hamish Curtis, joining Woods, Barnes and Lewis.

Spin Doctors made the most of their second chance, storming home with a commanding win.

Shaun Kennedy was best on the night, winning his three doubles matches and dropping eight games in total.

The final score was Spin Doctors 5-37, Macblack 1-20

As for Thursday Open A, due to ongoing players on international duties and doing nefarious dealings, the true championship was the friends we made along the way.
