A REBOUNDING Couldabeens are through to a grand final, while fellow midweek tennis surprise packets Volleys have also booked themselves a spot in a decider of their respective Broken Hill spring competitions.
In the Wednesday Division One, following the loss in the qualifying final the week previous, CouldaBeens made the most of their second chance with a resounding victory over Macblack.
Couldabeens only dropped the one set, with that loss being by tiebreaker, to clench a berth in the big dance. Remarkably, the set scoreline does not do the fixture justice as multiple matches went to and beyond a 7-5 score.
Wayne Lee was exceptional for Couldabeens, with Glenn Andrich, Jamie Passlow and Leonie Channing all combining to be a tough-to-beat force.
Macblack’s only set for the night came in that gallant tiebreaker win, with Ashley Mason and Curtis beating Lee and Channing.
At the end of the night, Couldabeens were heading into the grand final against Net Ninjas, five sets 41 games to 1 set 29 games.
Rolling into Thursday night and the Open A comp, Volleys kept their post-season going in ripping fashion.
After a tough elimination final win against Forehands, Volleys managed to overcome Backhands in another five-sets-to-one scoreline.
Josh Niarros and Adam Hellyer played an epic opening top doubles against Nathan Crabb and Corey Pascoe, with a tiebreaker needed to decide the winner.
Hellyer would have second tiebreaker success as he and Brady Wauchope outlasted Pascoe and Wayne Lee.
Backhands made sure not to be handed a doughnut on sets as Crabb and Peter Clarke played a very nice doubles to beat Niarros and Steve Gleeson.
But that was the only set achieved for Backhands, 5-40 to 1-31 at the conclusion of the preliminary final.
Volleys will now look to upset Topspins in grand final, to complete a fairytale season.
