Return serve for tennis

By Sam Campbell

IT was a return to regular programming at the Broken Hill Tennis Association last week as the lights were on and stayed on throughout the night.

In Wednesday night Division 1 fixtures for round 7, Couldabeens took on Macblack and cruised to a relatively easy victory, not dropping a single set.

Wayne Lee and Leonie Channing had a close call in their double together, scraping past Ash Mason and Ryan Lewis in a tiebreaker.

Couldabeens won six sets 42 games to zero sets 20 games.

It was a little closer when Net Ninjas did battle against Spin Doctors, but it was still a set-majority win.

Praise Ukpong had a grand night out, winning all three of his sets, including a gutsy 7-5 win with partner Oliver Brown over Doug Coff and Jenny Powell.

It wasn’t all bad news for Coff, he managed to win his other two sets for the night, the only two won by the Spin Doctors.

Net Ninjas were victorious 4-37 to 2-28.

The match between Keen-On Balls and Feauties was a close affair with some tight games taking place.

However, the Keen-On Balls team of Kelli Keenan, Corey Pascoe, Kel Wise and Boyd Keenan got the chocolates, 3-36 to 3-29.

On Thursday night, there was a tight tussle and a one-sided result.

With shortened numbers, Topspins, consisting of Patrick Reincke and Evan Boylan, took on Dropshots, made up of Matt Handberg and Adam Hellyer.

The opening double was an exciting affair with both duets delivering quality tennis.

Reincke and Boylan prevailed 7-4 to take an early lead.

Hellyer was damaging in his singles win over Boylan 7-1, getting his side back in the hunt.

Reincke put Topspins back into the lead with a grinding 7-4 win over Handberg.

Reincke and Boylan found the opening-double form and continued to use it, winning the last match of the night 7-3 and see Topspins win three sets to one.

While all that was happening, Volleys and Backhands hit the mattresses.

The opening top double between Nathan Crabb and Corey Pascoe, and Jeff Fisher and James “No Last Names for Me”, was brilliant to watch.

Excellent, high-quality doubles tennis throughout, culminating in a tense tiebreaker going Crabb and Pascoe’s way.

On the other court, Volleys secured their first set of the night as Brady Wauchope and Steve Gleeson downed Wayne Lee and Peter Clark 7-4.

Both sides exchanged blows across the next two doubles matches, winning one apiece.

Remarkably, that was same story in the final two sets of the night as well.

Crabb and Clark pulled off a gripping tiebreaker win over the refrigerator pair of Fisher and Gleeson.

The mysterious James and Wauchope bounced back for Volleys, beating Pascoe and Lee 7-5.

Volleys got the job done on games, 3-38 to 3-34.
