$1b for Barown in budget

THE Barwon electorate is set to see a record funding of around $1 billion flowing in following the announcement of the New South Wales State Budget on Tuesday.

The money amounts to extra $21 million in electorate-specific funding that has been allocated to Barwon compared to last year.

Local MP Roy Butler said Barwon said he was “pleased” by the announcement.

“I’m pleased to see record funding of around $1 billion flowing to Barwon for ongoing projects and for new infrastructure that will make a real difference to the quality of life in western NSW,” he said.

Highlights of the budget include $236.7 million over four years for Broken Hill water and sewerage services, $20.8 million for the Wilcannia Weir refurbishment, $6 million to support Central Darling Shire as it moves out of administration and $13.3 million towards a renewed Bourke Police Station.

Funding of $56.4 million has been added for the Willyama High School rebuild.

There’s $30.06 million for water projects and sewerage treatment plants in Brewarrina, Condobolin, Coonabarabran, Dunedoo, Lachlan Shire, Cobar, Tottenham, White Cliffs, Collarenebri, Baradine, Binnaway and Lightning Ridge.

Money will also go towards rail and road upgrades, upgrades to the Doppler radar network, social housing, the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and an opal centre at Lightning Ridge.

There is also significant funding in statewide programs, such as $246 million for Regional Multi-Purpose Services Facilities, $33.4 million for diversionary programs to address youth crime and $9.3 million for the Feral Pig and Pest Control Program.

Family and sexual violence services, and support for victim-survivors will get a $272.7 million boost.

This funding will strengthen service delivery and increase avenues for women and children across the state to seek help and safety.

Mr Butler said his focus was on making sure the money was delivered to the Barwon electorate.

“I will be following up with the Government to make sure Barwon receives its fair share of this statewide program funding,” he said.

“I do note that there was only $25.4 million allocated towards the Regional Development Trust, compared to $50 million last year, which is one area of concern with this budget.”
