Driver charged following fatal crash

A DRIVER has been charged following a two-vehicle crash on the Barrier Highway on Sunday that left one man dead and two other people in hospital.

The car’s driver, a woman in her 40s, was taken to the Broken Hill hospital in a stable but serious condition, and arrested on her discharge on Monday, March 17.

She was charged at Broken Hill Police Station with dangerous driving occasioning death and negligent driving.

The incident took place before 4pm on Sunday, March 16, with emergency services called to the scene shortly after.

At the scene officers from the New South Wales Barrier Police District found a hatchback and prime mover had collided, causing the hatchback to roll.

The crash occurred approximately 60 kilometres from Broken Hill in the direction of Wilcannia.

The highway was closed from both directions and reopened at about 12pm on Monday.

The car’s passenger, a 41-year-old man, was treated on the scene by an ambulance but dies of his injuries at the scene.

The truck driver, a 55-year-old man, was taken to the Broken Hill hospital in a stable condition.

The drivers both undertook mandatory testing and police officers from the Crash Investigation Unit started an investigation, leading to the woman’s arrest.

She had her first appearance at Broken Hill Local Court was on Tuesday, March 18, where she was granted conditional bail and is set to return to court in May.
