Firearms among items recovered in vehicle stops

TWO vehicle stops on Monday, February 24 in Broken Hill and Cobar have resulted in multiple charges following the discovery of allegedly stolen goods from an aggravated home invasion in South Australia, as well as loaded firearms.

On Monday at about 8.45am, a New South Wales Police’s Broken Hill Highway Patrol officer stopped a white Hyundai van on the Barrier Highway.

The vehicle with had two male passengers also had the alleged proceeds of an aggravated break-in which took place around 1am in Yorketown, SA.

In the alleged break-in a 74-year old man was assaulted by three men.

Once pulled over, one passenger fled from police while 49-year-old man was arrested and refused bail, and appeared in court on Tuesday.

He was charged with 19 offences including 14 counts of possessing an unauthorised firearm, knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime, receiving property stolen outside NSW valued at more than $15,000, possessing a loaded firearm in a public place, not keeping a firearm safely, and possessing ammunition without holding the authority to do so.

On Tuesday in the Broken Hill Local Court it was decided the man’s matters be listed for a committal on Tuesday, April, 22, in Broken Hill.

After the original incident, at around 3pm on Monday officers from the Central North Police District stopped a white van near Cobar due to suspicion it had been accompanying the Hyundai van pulled over that morning.

The van was found to allegedly have items from the same break-in.

A 35-year-old man was arrested, refused bail and taken to Cobar Police Station, to appear in Cobar Local Court.

He was subsequently was charged with three offences; driving a motor vehicle during a disqualification period, knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime, and receiving property stolen outside NSW.

Following his appearance on Tuesday, the matters are listed for committal on March 3 at the Dubbo Local Court, the man’s bail also refused.

On Tuesday NSW Police said the SA Police prepared warrants to collect all money and the two vehicles involved in the arrests, and will apply to extradite the men to SA.

A NSW Police spokesperson said the extradition of the two men is a matter for SA Police and the courts.
