TWO local businesses, one of which is owned by Broken Hill City Council Mayor Cr Tom Kennedy appeared in court on Tuesday, February 11, in an effort to recover property in police custody.
Representatives of Broken Hill Sun Smart, owned by Cr Kennedy, and Silver City Motorcycles, took part in an application for disposal of property in police custody is regarding a lump sum of money which was stolen from Cr Kennedy’s business in 2020, and then used to buy a motorcycle.
In court it was noted by a Silver City Motorcycles’ representative the perpetrator came into the store and paid cash for a motorbike, and was known to the business previously and therefore not assumed to be suspicious.
The robbery left both businesses out of pocket, with Silver City Motors unable to get the motorcycle’s insurance pay-out due to the matter still being before the courts.
Cr Kennedy was present in court and represented himself, alongside a representative from Silver City Motorcycles.
Magistrate Jacqueline Trad informed the court that $12,750 had been recovered and that police seek to determine how the money should be distributed between two businesses.
Cr Kennedy said stakeholders had agreed on a 50/50 split, which Ms Trad agreed to.
