Alleged rapist with double identity confuses court

A BROKEN Hill man facing eleven charges including allegations of rape and contravening an apprehended violence order accused under two different aliases has had his committal hearing adjourned for two weeks.

Ryan David Edgecumbe, also known as Fred Edgecumbe, appeared calm as he fronted Broken Hill Local Court on Tuesday, January 28 via video link.

Mr Edgecumbe’s charges include five counts of sexual intercourse without consent which are labelled as strictly indictable – meaning the case would have to be heard in a higher court.

The remaining charges under the name Ryan David Edgecumbe related to allegations of stalking and/ or intimidation intended to cause fear and/ or physical harm, intentionally choking person without consent, and contravening prohibition and/ or restriction in an apprehended violence order.

There is also an apprehended violence order application where he is the defendant.

Mr Edgecumbe’s alias ‘Fred’ is also facing charges of contravening prohibition and/ or restriction in an apprehended violence order, and stalking and/ or intimidation intended to cause fear and/ or physical harm.

Due to this confusion surrounding the double aliases, Magistrate Jacqueline Trad adjourned the committal for two weeks to see if all matters can be joined and addressed together, including application for the AVO.

Mr Edgecumbe remains in custody with bail refused until Tuesday, February 11, where his committal and AVO mention will be conducted at the Broken Hill Court.
