Police warn of puppy scams

THE Barrier Police District is warning locals of online scammers, specifically cons offering puppies but requiring monetary deposits.

Barrier Police District Acting Inspector Matt Sippel said a Broken Hill resident was allegedly scammed out of a considerable amount of money after believing they were making a deposit to purchase a puppy.

“That page has now been deleted, unfortunately, not before they deposited some money,” Insp Sippel said.

“And unfortunately, the site was a scam. It didn’t exist.”

Insp Sipple also gave the public advice for purchasing online and avoiding scams.

“Advice from the police is, before depositing any money, to be certain by checking your sources; check the source of the information as best you can,” he said.

“Check the source of where the money is going and who’s advertising it.

“Try speaking directly with the person and just get more details if they’re going to be purchasing a puppy, or any items.”

Insp Sippel also said to try view any item before purchasing.

“If anyone does become aware of any fraudulent sites, have been scammed, or believe that they were going to be scammed, they can report the matter to Scamwatch online.”
