A Christmas message from Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton

AS 2024 draws to a close, my time remaining as your Federal Member is also coming to an end.

Although we still don’t know when the federal election will be called, the countdown will well and truly begin in the New Year.

This year has been one full of reflection for me. Since announcing my intention to retire back in March this year, I have been overwhelmed by the amount of support and well wishes I’ve received from constituents, colleagues and all those I’ve had the pleasure of working with over the years.

Just last month I clocked up 17 years as the Federal Member for Parkes – a milestone I never imagined I’d reach when I was first elected in 2007.

A few days prior to that anniversary, I delivered my valedictory speech to parliament, taking the opportunity to thank my family, friends, supporters, current and former staff, and my National Party and Coalition colleagues for their support over the past 17 years.

That speech was also a chance to look back on what I’ve achieved over the years and there certainly are so many things to be proud of – from the Western Cancer Centre in Dubbo to the small animal abattoir in Bourke, the Australian Opal Centre in Lightning Ridge, the Baaka Cultural Centre in Wilcannia and the library in Broken Hill.

While there’s so many projects I can point to, my proudest achievements are those which have largely been done without recognition.

Day in, day out my staff help people with various matters from issues with Telstra and Centrelink to reuniting families experiencing visa issues and helping our elderly navigate the aged care system.

There have been countless personal stories of success. It’s hard to sum up 17 years of work in a few sentences, but I think the greatest part of this job has been the people I’ve met along the way.

The Parkes electorate is home to so many hard-working, decent, innovative, salt of-the-earth people and it’s been an incredible privilege to represent you all.

Thank you for your faith in me.

Robyn and I would like to wish you and your loved ones a very merry Christmas, and a healthy and happy 2025.
