EMILY Tremelling might only have one horse in work, but she’s hoping her fledgling career as a trainer means she will be able to saddle up and head (most likely) south to really make her mark in the racing industry.
The 28-year-old is currently juggling the early morning starts demanded of trainers with her full time job at TASCO Petroleum.
And has her six-year-old gelding Garrire targeting St Pat’s Day – but almost certainly not the cup.
Tremelling only took over the horse late last year, and in its first start for her it ran a good second in Broken Hill on November 9 and then just missed out at Balaklava a month later – runner-up again.
“I only got my licence in 2023, and my first winner was O’whatapicture (with Stacey Metcalfe in the saddle) at Balaklava on October 16 in 2024,” Tremelling said.
“The eight-year-old gelding won again for me at the Silver City meeting here in the November but that’s all the winners I have to date,” she said.
“Garrire has been consistent for me since I took him over – he is owned by a local syndicate – and while it would have been exciting to nominate him for the cup this year, because of the problems with the track he is simply lacking the gallops necessary to be at that level I think.
“If I had been able to get a couple of race starts in him I would have thought about it, but he has only had the one start this year, so he will go around in a 1400m race, and not be pushed into the 1600m of the cup.
“As it is, I have had to take him down to Mildura for a gallop to get him ready for cup day.”
Which might not have been too onerous, Tremelling is actually from the Sunraysia capital, before moving north to Broken Hill.
She has been involved with horses for many years and always planned to become a trainer.
And is already looking for another horse to add to her team.
“It’s not so bad training for owners; you get paid every month,” she said. “If you train your own horses you are up for all the costs – feed, vets, farriers, travel, everything.
“Being on my own as trainer, trackworker and stablehand – I rent some stables on Racecourse Rd – I haven’t gone too far yet, but I guess for me being a trainer in Victoria would be the pinnacle.
“But I might take a few smaller steps first and look at something in South Australia – but I will try it somewhere because this is what I want to do.”
