Lung bus rolls into town

THERE was no room to breathe as the Lung Health Bus came into town, and it wasn’t due to the state-of-the-art facilities.

It was due to the free health clinic being completely booked out during their visit here.

The free lung screening checks can be lifesaving by ensuring early detection and treatment of dust diseases like asbestosis, silicosis and mesothelioma.

The lung bus program provides free lung screening checks to more than 5000 workers annually in regional New South Wales.

The new mobile clinic features several innovations including digital chest X-ray technology, providing precise and reliable first instance imaging, enhanced spirometry (lung function) testing equipment to evaluate breathing capacity and respiratory performance.

Radiographer and team lead Linda Apin said they didn’t have to advertise that they were coming.

“We never need to advertise,” she said.

“There are a lot of people here that need testing.”

Ms Apin said she hopes the three-day visit could turn into a weeklong visit next year.

“We will definitely be coming back, so people should apply to see if they are eligible for testing,” she said.

The icare Lung Bus has been travelling the length and breadth of the state, including visits to Newcastle, Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour, Taree, Tuncurry, Spears Point, Tweed Heads, Gosford, Nowra, Shellharbour, Port Kembla, Bathurst, Dubbo, Broken Hill, Wagga Wagga, Griffith and Tamworth.
