ED upgrade closer to completion

BROKEN Hill’s emergency department has now completed Stage 2 of the $12 million project, which includes reconfiguration of five treatment bays, staff spaces and clinical back-of-house areas to provide a more functional clinical workplace for staff and patients in need of emergency care.

Minister for Regional Health, Ryan Park, said the upgrades will see the ED become a first-class health facility.

“The progress of the ED upgrade to the final stage means we are another step closer to a first-class and modern health facility for the people of Broken Hill,” Mr Park said.

“The completion of Stage 2 of the Broken Hill ED is great news for staff, who now have a better space to work in when treating people needing emergency care.

“Patients and visitors will see some major changes with the start of the third and final stage now under way. This will include the construction of a new entry and waiting room, an improvement in patient flow and a much smoother ED experience.”

The third and final stage of the ED upgrade project is now underway and includes the construction of a new main entry, reception area, waiting room and triage space, as well as an interview/consult room and two treatment bays.

Member for Barwon, Roy Butler, said the ED experience on the whole will be improved.

“With two of the three stages now complete in the upgraded emergency department, we can really start to see how the new spaces will improve the ED experience for patients and staff,” he said.

“I am looking forward to seeing the completed ED upgrade at the end of the year as this important project comes to a close and thank the community and staff for their patience during construction.

“I welcome any in investment in medical infrastructure in Barwon to improve the patient experience and the work environment for staff.”

A new Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit is also being delivered at the same time and is expected to be complete later this year.
