Art therapy to help with loss

LIFELINE Broken Hill has employed a new bereavement counsellor, who will be launching a new art support group aimed at helping individuals process grief.

Murphy Barker will be facilitating the Empowered Creations Art Group, a free eight-week support program.

Barker said the service will provide counselling and support to people experiencing difficulty following the death of a loved one.

“This group is open to people over the age of 18, and no experience is necessary.

“Basic art supplies will be provided, but people are welcome to bring their own materials if they have a preferred medium.

“Together, we’ll use simple art practices to explore and express out grief in a safe, supportive space.”

Murphy, a social worker, is a Broken Hill local who took the role to provide support for those navigating loss.

“Grief is something I know personally.

I’ve experienced the loss of multiple loves ones, and I understand how disorienting, heavy, and isolating it can feel.

“My own grief journey led me to the power of creative expression – and how making something with our hands can help us to meet grief in a new way.

“It doesn’t make the pain go away, but it creates space.

“It helps us move with our grief, rather than around it.”

The groups will be held at the Lifeline training room, 194 Argent Lane, on Tuesday afternoons at 2pm and they’ll run from July 8 until August 26.
