Plans expanded for health service

THE town’s hospital will see an upgraded emergency department and new key health worker accommodation, along with a new mental health unit as part of the Broken Hill Health Service Redevelopment.

Meanwhile, a new acute mental health inpatient unit has been co-designed with mental health clinicians, consumers and carers with lived experience.

The Broken Hill Hospital’s emergency department will see a $12 million upgrade including a full internal refurbishment of the existing ED.

Twenty new modern staff accommodation units have been built sent to the existing staff quarters at the hospital campus, as part of the State Government’s Key Worker Accommodation Program.

Health and Regional Health Minister Ryan Park said spending on accommodation for healthcare workers will benefit not only staff but also patients and the wider community.

“We know that securing suitable accommodation in rural areas can be difficult, so the new units will make it easier for healthcare workers looking at making the move to a rural or regional town to live and work,” he said.

Once complete the units will be fully furnished and self-contained and are expected to be ready to be moved into early next year.

A statement from the Government said the aim of the accommodation project was to assist the health service leadership in recruiting and retaining workers.
