Consistent Kobe

DESPITE his team being on an eight-game losing streak and spluttering towards the season’s end this Saturday, former North Broken Hill footballer Kobe Mutch has been remarkable consistent across the breadth of the entire 2025 SANFL season.

Back at Woodville West Torrens this season, Mutch, after 17 rounds is equal third across the SANFL league competition for most possessions won.

Mutch so far has collected 438 disposals, at an average of 25.8 touches a game.

He is equal with Norwood’s Nick Rokahr, the 2024 Sandover medallist in the WAFL.

In front of him are Port Adelaide Jack Watkins on 460 and Magarey Medal favourite Tom Lewis from Sturt with 448 possessions.

Only twice across the campaign has he secured less than 20 touches in a game and there was two more times he has finished with less than 25 disposals.

He is also second amongst the SANFL league tackle count list, with Mutch having laid in 104, just six behind the leader, Lewis.

He is also sixth in the top 10 for “clearances won”, with 93 and second in the league for Free Kicks for, behind just West Adelaide’s Kobe Ryan having been awarded 44.

This is Mutch’s fifth season in the SANFL, starting with the Eagles in 2021 and being a part of the premiership triumph over Glenelg.

In 2023, living and working south of the city he transferred across the South Adelaide Panthers, playing 30 games in the blue and white across a pair of winters.

He has committed to the Eagles for the 2026 SANFL season, with the round 19 fixture, this Sunday being his 79th league match.

“It has been an outstanding season for Kobe, in what has been a tough second half of the season for our football club,” Woodville West Torrens coach Sam Jacobs explained.

“He is a proper inside midfielder

“With Rowey (James Rowe), they be a bit of lone soldiers for us in the mids.

“He should certainly in the mix for SANFL Team of the Year honours, despite the lack of wins across the back end of the season.

“What isn’t known by many, he has managed his own injuries issues and can still be a consistent performer through our ups and downs.”

Mutch himself has been through a full football journey, from Broken Hill to the Wentworth Roos and talent pathways and onto Essendon’s AFL list

“Personally, been reasonably happy with my year, but results have been frustrating from a team perspective,” Mutch told the Broken Hill Times.

“You play footy to be involved in finals.

“The stats don’t tell the entire story of a season, but pleasingly I’ve been able to play through injury and still be consistent.

“I will go around again next year at Woodville West Torrens.

“It’s my intention play at SANFL level or in the highest level possible as long as the motivation continues.”

Outside football commitments, Mutch is studying to become an exercise physiologist, and is about a year and a bit away from completing his degree.
