Government app allows stock feed comparison

THE New South Wales Government have advised livestock producers across the Far West region to make use of the Drought Feed Calculator app to ensure they are purchasing the most cost-effective feed options for their stock.

A spokesperson from Local Land Services said there is often potential for hidden costs when buy stock feed so prior research is important.

“Purchasing stock feed is no different to any other investments, you need to do your research and consider all their pros and cons,” the spokesperson said.

“Prior to make a purchase, livestock producers should compare different types of feed to consider their cost effectiveness in terms of energy and protein content.”

The spokesperson reminded producers that while purchasing the cheapest option available might be tempting when seasonal conditions deteriorate, ensuring feed is nutritious and quality will help keep stock healthy and productive, which can help producers to save money in the long run.

“Producers should also consider what infrastructure they have or require on farm to offer the feed to their stock, where the feed is sourced from, transport costs, biosecurity considerations and so forth,” the spokesperson said.

The Drought Feed Calculator app, developed by NSW Department for Primary Industries and Regional Development, can be used to compare cost and nutritional value of feeds, while also considering transport costs and availability.

The app can be downloaded for free on the Apple App store or Google Play and Local Land Services can be contacted for questions regarding stock feed and managing local conditions.
