A blue-green algae red alert has been issued for Lake Menindee, with a WaterNSW spokesperson advising water users to avoid contact with the water.
Blue-green algae has the potential to cause gastroenteritis if consumed, as well as skin and eye irritations. Toxins found in the water can cause liver damage.
Recreational activities such as swimming, water skiing and canoeing are advised against, and pets and livestock should be prevented from drinking the water.
Mussels and crayfish from the area should not be consumed, and a cautionary approach to eating fin fish should be approached. Fishing should be avoided to minimise risk of exposure to toxic water.
