Red alert altered for Menindee

A RED alert for potentially toxic levels of blue-green algae that was first issued on 21 January has been lifted and amended to amber status.

Two consecutive laboratory algae reports from Water New South Wales indicated water in the lake was no longer at red alert quality.

Water users are still encouraged to exercise caution under the new amber alert, but water is generally safe for water sports.

Water shouldn’t be drunk during an amber alert, and users are advised that boiling water will not inactivate toxins from algae and the water is still considered unsuitable for potable use.

It’s advised water users continue to avoid water that is discoloured or gives off an earthy or musty odour, as lake conditions can change dramatically in a short amount of time.

Updates and information about blue-green algae alerts can be found at waternsw.com.au/algae or by telephoning 1300 662 077.
