WaterNSW issued a red alert for high levels of blue-green algae in Lake Menindee on Tuesday.
Recreational activities such as swimming, water skiing, canoeing and any other activities that involve contact with the water should be avoided, according to the alert.
The alert will remain in place until testing confirms the risk is diminished.
Water that is contaminated with blue-green algae may cause gastroenteritis if consumed, as well as skin and eye irritation.
Consuming the water can potentially cause liver damage and other health issues. Boiling the water doesn’t remove the risk of contamination.
Crayfish and mussels from red alert areas shouldn’t be eaten, and fish need to be cleaned and washed thoroughly in uncontaminated water before being eaten. Internal organs should not be eaten. The alert recommends avoiding fishing throughout the algal bloom period entirely.
