Mutawintji Cultural Festival goes ahead

AFTER potential for a washout cancelling the event, Mutawintji Cultural Festival organiser Leroy Johnson has confirmed the roads have now dried up and the event will go on as planned.

“It’s all dried up and ready for Friday,” Mr Johnson said.

“We encourage people to drive safely and to the conditions, and to travel with others if they can.”

Festivities kick off this morning at Mutawintji National Park, with a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony to mark the opening of the two-day event.

“We’ll have a breakfast, a bit of an opening ceremony, and then we’ll get stuck into activities, workshops, tours, and then the dance on Friday and Saturday night,” Mr Johnson said.

As of Wednesday, about 200 tickets to the festival had been sold.

“Which is more than last year,” Mr Johnson said.

“So it’s definitely growing.”

Tours and walks, local bush tucker meals, Corroborree and workshops in dancing, weaving and painting will be the focus of the festival, and Mr Johnson said the event will be similar to previous years.

“The plan is just to improve on the recipe we’ve got,” he said.

“Learning from what we’ve done last year and then putting those things into practice for this year so that it can run even smoother.”
