Red Dirt, Blues Skies call for art

THE Broken Hill Art Exchange is calling for entries for their Red Dirt, Blue Skies Artist Trail, an installation that will see businesses throughout town transform into exhibits displaying local art.

The series will take place throughout August, coinciding with Mundi Mundi Bash and peak-tourist season in Broken Hill, and artists from across the Far West are invited to submit work celebrating the region.

All art forms are welcome, whether that be 2D, 3D, installation, moving image or performance-based works, as long as they are able to be displayed.

The works will be installed in local businesses to transform the town into a vibrant, self-guided exhibition trail for three weeks.

Local businesses who would like to be a part of the exhibition trail are also encouraged to reach out to the Art Exchange, with the group’s president Susanne Rae Jones saying exhibiting as part of the trail could help businesses see an increase in trade.

“It’s a great opportunity to bring foot traffic to your business,” she said.

Ms Jones said the ideal location for work to be displayed is somewhere it will be visible at all times, for example in shop windows.

Galleries are also able to register to be on the trail map, through the Art Exchange website.

Ms Jones said the exhibition trail was called for in feedback from a survey they facilitated last year.

“In 2024 we surveyed the community to find out what they wanted from BHAE and many called for the return of the pre-COVID exhibition across the city in association with the Desert Equinox,” she said.

“Red Dirt Blue Skies Artist Trail is that reimagined at the same time as Mundi Mundi it is envisaged to showcase our local artists and draw visitors into town.”
