THE 2025 Waste 2 Art exhibition opened this week, showcasing artworks made from recycled materials and trash at the Tip Shop and Geo Centre.
The exhibition is a collaboration between Lifeline Broken Hill and the Broken Hill Art Exchange, with Art Exchange secretary Nadina Benvenisti saying this year’s theme of ‘toys’ meant art made by primary school students was more prevalent than ever.
“This year we’ve got a lot of primary school kids because of the schools,” she said.
“It’s really important for this sort of grassroots project because we’re losing that creativity with AI and digital tools, and creating is not so much about the end goal as the process.
“The working things out, and things don’t work and you come up with this innovation and your artwork ends up being something totally different. Those skills are really valuable for young minds.”
Ms Benevenisti said there was a huge range of varied artworks, mostly of the 3D variety due to the theme.
“The community has really come to the table with some impressive artworks,” she said.
“And again, lots of different interpretations of the theme, which is always great.”
The exhibition is on show during opening hours at the Geo Centre and Tip Shop, and visitors are welcome to vote for the people’s choice award which is to be drawn on June 14 at the awards event.
Ms Benvenisti said the exhibition is a culmination of a huge community effort.
“It takes a community to organise something like this,” she said.
