New queer event this September

PLANS have been announced for a brand new, weekend-long celebration of queer culture, as part of an event hosted by The Tipsy Camel brewery on Buck Street, this September.

Owner of the Tipsy Camel, and drag performer, Brendan Barlow, said the event titled Rainbow in the Outback is something he’s wanted to do for a long time.

“This is something I’ve wanted to do for a really long time,” he said.

“To have something where people feel as though they belong. This is an event for queer people and for allies to celebrate diversity.”

The event will take place over the weekend of September 13 and 14, with plans for twilight markets and entertainment on Friday night as well as a short film screening.

Saturday will begin with a walking tour before the brewery turns into a queer nightclub later that evening with DJs and performances.

Barlow said the inspiration for the festival comes from queer festivals he’s attended as a drag performer.

“It’s really sort of come from inspiration from attending Rainbow on the Plains, which is a Mardi Gras festival that happens in Hay,” he said.

“I’ve been performing there the last five years and it’s an awesome weekend.

“It’s really got a great community vibe to it and there’s a really strong sense of diversity and support for that diversity from the whole community.

“So it truly is a queer event for allies and queer people.”

Barlow said he’s also hoping to find a few more sponsors to come on board.
