Outback Art Prize opens

THE Broken Hill City Art Gallery has called for entries to the Pro Hart Outback Art Prize’s 2025 competition and exhibition.

The prize showcases work in any media which reflects the spirit and diversity of the Australian outback, with a total prize pool of $23,000 on offer.

The winning work will be added to the Broken Hill City Art Gallery’s nationally recognised collection.

The award, renamed after legendary local artist Pro Hart, acknowledges the Hart family’s generous contributions to the arts in Broken Hill.

Entries opened on April 1 and close on June 30, with finalists to be notified on July 11 and an exhibition opening and awards night on August 15.

Last year saw multiple local artists included in the finalists exhibition, including Joshua de Gruchy, Clark Barrett, Judy Antill, Jim Paterson, Dave Doyle, Rick Ball and Kelly Leonard.

Artist, Paul Connor took out the $20,000 acquisitive first prize with his mixed media work 9 Days in the life of Broken Hill.

The previous competition in 2022 saw local artist Verity Nunan win the competition with An ‘Akubra’ Story, for which Nunan used oils, and burnt mulga and red gum charcoal collected from Wilcannia to make the work on canvas.

Artists can submit their work via the Broken Hill City Art Gallery website.
