THE newly formed cinema club, Red Dirt Film Club has partnered with the Broken Hill Musicians Club to screen cult classic film Wake in Fright at the Silver City Cinema on April 9. The recently remastered version of the film will be shown, which has been scanned from the original camera negative, and colour corrected and stabilised one shot at a time.
The film, which was shot at locations throughout Broken Hill and the surrounding region, was first screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 1971, before the original negatives were lost for decades and assumed to have been destroyed.
In 2002, the original film was located in a vault in Pittsburgh. Marked for destruction and imminent disposal, the film’s editor Anthony Buckley was able to save it just in time.
Members of the film club will now be able to attend monthly screenings on Wednesday evenings at the Silver City Cinema, and Sunday afternoons will soon see screenings at the Palace Hotel.
Club president Deb Hunt said the new partnerships will allow the club to host more screenings.
“This generous sponsorship from the Musicians Club means we can offer our members a wider choice of films and more screening opportunities,” she said.

Attendance at screenings is restricted to members of the Red Dirt Film Club.
