Willyama High School rebuild plan released

THE proposed master plan for the rebuild of Willyama High School has been revealed by the state government.

The rebuild, which is due to begin by 2026, will accommodate up to 730 students and can be expanded in the future if required.

The plans include 30 general and specialist classrooms, including four science classrooms, four support classrooms, two modern science labs, learning commons, multipurpose spaces, a library, staff room and staff study, administration facility, school hall, covered outdoor learning area and courtyard.

The new school will also feature specialised facilities such as wood and metal workshops, a visual arts workshop, a performance workshop space, a PE workshop, a new construction workshop, food technology kitchen and commercial kitchen for hospitality.

The existing basketball court, agricultural plot and Building B construction workshop will remain.

There will also be a large central oval, games court and open spaces, as well as inclusive facilities such as accessible classrooms, an elevator, accessible parking, outdoor areas and specialist facilities for students with additional needs.

Minister for Education Prue Car said the rebuild was being planned with the community in mind.

“From day one, the Government has made it clear that the voice of the community would be at the heart of this rebuild and I am pleased that, to date, we have heard from hundreds of students, staff, parents and community members,” she said.

“But I want to stress, consultation is not over yet.”

Local member for Barwon Roy Butler said it was important the rebuild ensures that facilities will be adequate into the future.

“The new Willyama High School must provide contemporary facilities for students in Broken Hill for years to come, and it will be good to see progress being made on the rebuild,” he said.

“Willyama is an important school for the Broken Hill community and it is vital that we continue to work constructively with the community to see it delivered for local families and to see that they get the school that they need.”

Demolition work will begin in coming weeks.

A drop-in community information session will allow community members to meet with the project team to ask questions today between 2.30-7pm at Broken Hill High School Hall.
