School safety for first day back

WITH most students returning to school yesterday, hundreds of school zones across regional New South Wales could benefit from enhanced accessibility and safety following upgrades delivered as part of the School Zone Infrastructure Sub Program.

The program, a collaboration between Federal and State government with assistance from local councils, implemented almost 475 safety improvements on roads near schools in regional and rural areas throughout the state.

The updates were made to ensure drivers and pedestrians could safely navigate school zones with installation of things like zebra crossings, traffic signals, footpaths, signage upgrades, creation of “kiss and drop” locations and ensuring safe access between bus stops and schools.

NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Jenny Aitchison, said that ensuring safety around schools was a top priority.

“Ensuring the safety of our students as they travel to and from school is a high priority for the NSW Government,” she said.

“The enhancements made through the School Zone Infrastructure Sub Program will not only protect our young road users but also provide peace of mind for parents and caregivers.

“As we welcome students back to school, let’s remember that road safety is a shared responsibility. I urge all drivers to stay vigilant in school zones, ensuring our children arrive at school safely.”
