North wins grand final victory

NORTH women’s cricket team fought hard to secure a win against South, winning by five wickets in the T20 Barrier Cricket League grand final on Saturday.

South went to bat first at the Norm Fox Oval with the opening duo of Abbey Johns and Lakisha Sloane.

North kept Johns to three runs when she was caught by Steph Balman in the third over.

Molly Bright was the next wicket to go, falling in the fifth over for one run to Ellie Simmons.

Stephanie Wylie was able to quickly knock up runs with two fours off Keira Boxsell.

Wylie had a repeat in the next over with two fours off Simmons.

By the ninth over, South were 2/49.

Sloane was caught by Cassie Robinson in the 10th over with a score of 12.

Two wickets fell in quick succession in the 13th over, with Abbey Stevens being caught by Hannah Morris, and Heidi Drenkhahn by Simmons.

Grace Faulder then went two balls later when she was caught by Brooklyn Gibson for a duck, with all three wickets going to Boxsell.

Brooke Jordan made five before being run out.

Wylie continued to hit out all around the ground for South in a superb solo display before Hannah Maalste was bowled by Britt Tangey for a duck.

Alice Edmondson also went for a duck, bowled by Sophie Milne in the 19th over.

Bronte Johns faced the same fate three balls later.

At the completion of 20 overs, South were all out for 116.

Gibson and Milne opened the batting for North, with Gibson making nine before being bowled by Edmondson.

Milne made five before being caught by Drenkhahn.

Robinson dug in for a knock of 20 before she was run out by Stevens.

Balman also had a good run with 27 off 27 balls before being caught by Sloane.

Britt Tangey was not out for 18 and Boylan was caught by Abbey Johns on two.

Simmons came out to support Tangey making eight not out.

Tangey hit the winning runs with a boundary to take North to 5/120 and ahead of South’s 116.

The game was fast paced and North showed a lot of class.

South were strong in defence but couldn’t get the wickets fast enough to stop North.
