Eight ducks in West annihilation

IT’S rarity to see a scoresheet with eight little ducks but that was the case when the West lineup succumbed to a powerful bowling display as South make easy work of their women Barrier District Cricket League rivals.

In extraordinary circumstances, eight West players failed to score as Alice Edmondson picked up five wickets and Bronte Johns three in a demolition job for the ages.

From the get go on Sunday there was a confident feeling around the South with some clear bowling and fielding plans in place, but no-one could have predicted the events that would transpire.

These plans were put into action when captain Bronte Johns won the toss sending West into bat.

First to bowl was left-arm enforcer Lily McCure, bowling a tight over not allowing the West girls to settle in.

Next up was Bronte Johns at her clinical best bowling a tight line, again putting pressure on the batters.

Alice Edmondson takes the ball for the third over, and it didn’t take her long to strike, dismissing Milla Attard thanks to the safe hands of Bronte Johns. On the very next ball Edmondson dismissed the new West batter with a beautiful slow ball nicked and caught behind by Abbey Johns.

West were given no respite in the following over with Bronte Johns coming on and capturing three wickets in a maiden over.

Then, with Edmondson on a roll, she takes the ball again proving to be unplayable and snagging another two wickets in the over, dismissing the very dangerous Kendra Bugmy and Phoebe Knell with both batters unable to trouble the scorers.

Lakisha Sloane and Heidi Drenkhahn were next in line to bowl leading up to drinks, putting pressure on the batters and keeping the run rate to a minimum.

The next wicket fell in the 12th over courtesy of McCure bowling a stunning ball that swung into the leg stump dismissing the dangerous Paige Cuy.

The ninth wicket fell soon after in the 13th, with Edmondson claiming her fifth wicket for the day, furthering her impressive performance.

The last wicket fell in the 14th over with a handy run out orchestrated by Drenkhahn, getting the ball in quickly to Brooke Jordan who took the bails off with ease.

A.Edmondson 5/6 off 3 overs.

B.Johns 3/8 off 4 overs.

L.McCure 1/5 off 3 overs.

Chasing 34 to win, openers Abbey Johns and Lakisha Sloane played smart and handled the run chase with ease, both finishing not out in the ninth over.

Sloane hit some lovely shots, finding a couple boundaries along the way and pushing plenty of twos with the help of Johns.

L.Sloane 21 not out.

A.Johns 9 not out.
