Warriors whack wounded Dogs

ON a slightly overcast day at Zinc Oval, neither side were disappointed when B Grade North captain opted to bat first and send Warriors into the field.

Opening batters Tom Nicolle and the in-form Josh Savage were well contained as Shane Dalby and Clint Pearce bowled a disciplined line and length in the early exchanges.

When the pair did find the opportunity to score, they did put any loose balls away.

After doing the hard work early, Nicolle was the first to fall, nicking one on 10 through to Chris West off the bowling of former Northie Lachie Bell.

Ben Victory returning from illness came in at No.3 but departed quickly as he was caught by Pearce off the bowling of Bell for 0, putting North 2/30.

No.4 Dylan Millsteed and Savage got to work with some aggressive running between the wickets.

Savage put the foot down after drinks as he put the Warriors’ bowling to the sword and cruised past 50 for the second straight match.

On 61, Savage went for one too many and West took the catch at mid off, off the bowling of Pearce. North were 3/87.

After a great supporting role in the partnership with Savage, Millsteed was next to go bowled by Pearce for 13.

Zel Nejaim got on to a couple of lusty blows in his short stay, but was soon enough bowled by Dalby for 10.

Wickets continued to tumble. Rhys Pitt on two scooped a catch to Dalby off Pearce. When Joshua Botten was dismissed LBW by Dalby for a duck, North were suddenly 7/102.

Jacob Muscat tried his best to keep the scoreboard ticking as wickets continued to fall, however North were bundled out for 109.

Millsteed after his excellent display against South took the new ball with Ben Victory. The pair toiled hard without luck.

From that point onwards, West and Josef Niedermayer took to the North attack and scored runs at will, as North struggled to contain the boundaries.

Warriors raced to 0/74 off 10 overs as West passed 50 in a hurry.

With two runs to win, West looked to finish the job, but was caught by Pitt off the bowling of Campbell Day. West was brutal in his 72 off just 49 balls.

It was a great achievement for Campbell, who took his first senior wicket, hopefully many more to come as the years progress.

No.3 Lachie Bell, not expecting to bat, entered the arena without pads and slashed one over point to complete the nine-wicket victory inside 14 overs.

A disappointing result for North after such a positive start with the bat, but the Warriors were too good on the day.
