$2000 raised for mental health through sport

THE annual How’s Ya Mate? Soccer Round took place in Broken Hill last Sunday, an initiative that aims to improve mental health in sporting communities through promoting open conversations, counselling and training.

The round is a collaboration between Life Regional South Australia and Far West New South Wales and local soccer clubs, and HYM program co-ordinator Jacinta Cullen said perfect conditions added to the success of the day.

“The HYM Soccer Broken Hill Round was truly fantastic. The sun was out, and it was a perfect day with a supportive bunch of people getting behind the cause and checking on their mates,” she said.

Players observed a minute silence prior to kick-off, to remember those lost to suicide.

Ms Cullen addressed all players before each match to emphasise the importance of checking in on one-another and having open conversations around mental health, on and off-field.

Over $2000 was raised, with Ms Cullen expressing gratitude to all involved.

“A special thanks to everyone who made a purchase, and St Joe’s Soccer Club for their HYM-coloured guernseys and Alma Soccer Club for wearing HYM socks,” she said.

“The vibrant orange showcased the HYM message, with all merchandise sales profits supporting the not-for-profit mental health initiative.”

HYM, in partnership with Lifeline, offers free accidental counselling and certified workshops for sports environments, delivered by accredited trainers.
