Volunteer day sees plant giveaway

LOCAL Government Week will be celebrated with this weekend’s Plant Giveaway and Volunteer Expo at the Broken Hill Civic Centre.

From 10am-1pm on Saturday, pop-up stalls run by council staff and local volunteer groups will be ready to answer questions about how council operates and volunteering.

As part of the event, 450 plants will be given away, which will include a range of ground covers and hardy shrubs.

There’ll also be food and drinks provided.

Broken Hill City Council Mayor Cr Tom Kennedy said he’s impressed with the number of stallholders this year.

“I’m really impressed with the number of volunteer stallholders we have this year, there’s going to be a great range of groups to talk to – whether you’re looking to volunteer or you just need some assistance,” he said.

“I’m also really happy to see that the plant giveaway remains popular, especially with the range of smaller plants and ground-covers available which will help keep dust down.

“Hopefully locals can take advantage of this day and green their yards and get involved with the many worthwhile volunteer organisations we have here in Broken Hill.”

Plants will include Correa ‘Pink Mist’, Westringia ‘Naringa’, Westringia ‘Smokie’, Callistemon and more.

Stallholders include Lifeline South Australia and Far West NSW, Landcare Broken Hill, WIRES Far West branch, 2DRY FM, NSW Rural Service, Lions Club Broken Hill, Rotary Club of Broken Hill and more.
