Lions bed down help

FOR more than 10 years, the Broken Hill Lions Club has been donating bedding, whether that be mattresses, sheets or blankets, to those in need via St Vincent de Paul.

Lions club member and former president Greg Delbridge said the club raised $1000 to purchase numerous mattresses for the charity, through events like their barbecue, car raffles, and even delivering catalogues on a paper route throughout town.

“We decided to start delivering pamphlets around town about three years ago, which has enabled us to do some really good stuff over the last couple of years,” Mr Delbridge said.

Phil Sky, the St Vincent de Paul Conference president, said that the Lions Club have been very generous through their projects over the years.

“The mattress has been one of their projects, and so when someone needs assistance, whether they’re moving house and in desperate need, we can assist with bedding and that sort of thing,” Mr Sky said.

“If it’s not a mattress there will be sheets and blankets, so they’ve always been here to help us.”

Lions Club representatives Greg Delbridge and Desmond Ross Wecker have met with Phil Sky to donate two double mattresses and two singles.

Along with their donations to local charities, the local Lions Club also fundraise for other local facilities, recently raising close to $9,284 for Broken Hill Palliative to purchase a bladder scanning machine.

Mr Delbridge said this was a part of the ‘Presidents Project’ while he was president of the club, which sees the club raise funds annually for whichever worthy cause deemed appropriate by the president.

He recently received a letter from Parliament congratulating him and the club for their efforts.

“That makes it all worth it, to receive this kind of recognition!” he said.
