Updated RSPCA opened

THE Broken Hill RSPCA’s updated facility was officially opened on Wednesday by Minister for Local Government Ron Hoenig and Broken Hill City Council Mayor Cr Tom Kennedy.

The $1.8 million spent on the hospital allowed for upgrades including expanded surgical and treatment spaces, new consultation rooms and isolation wards, modernised equipment and new surgery tables.

It’s hoped this transformation will allow an even better service of care for pets in the Far West.

The Broken Hill RSPCA Hospital has been caring for animals in the region for over 50 years, treating more than 3000 animals in the last 12 months alone.

Mr Hoenig said the facility’s upgrades were important to offering the highest standard of care.

“The RSPCA Broken Hill Veterinary Hospital plays a vital role in caring for pets and other animals in some of our most remote communities,” he said.

“I’m pleased the New South Wales Government was able to support a much-needed upgrade of this important facility – its first major renovation in over 50 years.

“The upgrade will give RSPCA NSW the space and modern facilities needed to ensure its staff can deliver the best standard of care for animals in Broken Hill and the broader region.”

RSPCA NSW chief veterinarian Dr Liz Arnott said that the ability to provide 24-hour emergency care for animals would be of huge benefit to the Far West community.

“Due to our remote location, the Broken Hill Veterinary Hospital is one of two veterinary services which provide 24-hour emergency care in the region,” she said.

“As a result, we see a significant number of trauma and complex medical cases requiring urgent treatment.

“These upgrades mean our team is now fully equipped to provide state-of-the-art care to the animals that need us most.”
