Winners and losers in grants revealed

COMMUNITY assistance grants issued by Broken Hill City Council are set to be capped at $5000 and organisations will be able to benefit biennially.

The move comes as round one of round one recipients were revealed for the 2025/26 period.

As part of the announcement, the grant panel also recommended there be a clause that caps grants awarded at $5000 for each round of funding for each organisation and a clause that limits organisations to receiving a grant every two financial years, rather than once every 12 months.

The grant panel also sought to include an eligibility clause that prevents organisations who receive government funding from applying.

It was suggested during the last council meeting that community organisations that use the funding for rate relief develop memorandum of understanding with the municipality.

BRCC Mayor Cr Tom Kennedy said there were groups that has historical agreements in place to help cover rates and other bills.

Among those successful in receiving a piece of the $45,942.90 in funding as part of round one of the community assistance grants were the Broken Hill Soccer Association, Broken Hill Repertory Society, Silver City Swim Club, Silver City CRC, Big Sky Stories, Broken Hill Art Exchange, the Potters’ Society, Silver City Quilters, and the Desert Rate Rod and Custom Club.

Those who were unsuccessful were the Y NSW and the Sydney Youth Orchestra.

The Y NSW applied for $10,000 in funding for mobility and fitness training to the residents of aged care housing in Broken Hill.

In a council report from the panel meeting, it is said this project will be self-funded.

The Sydney Youth Orchestra were requesting the costs to cover the hire of the Civic Centre but the panel meeting reported that ticket prices could be increased to cover costs.
