Sliding in for Big Freeze support

OVER 20 locals braved freezing conditions to take part in the Regional Aquatic Centre’s Big Freeze slide on Monday.

The DIY event was held with “celebrity sliders” and was part of the fundraising efforts for the fight against Motor Neurone Disease.

“FightMND is such a great cause, and we were keen to be involved in their efforts,” YMCA Broken Hill Wellness Centre cluster manager Justin Hoskins said.

“With a slide sitting there ready for use, we thought it was a perfect opportunity too good to pass up.”

A great day was had with lots of volunteers coming forward to slide into icy waters.

“We had more than 20 sliders on the day,” Mr Hoskins said. “It was a great day; about 50 people came to watch the sliders and support the cause.”

Mr Hoskins said the sliders were very cold.

“But they all were very excited to participate and especially for Nash Mitchell and Giuliana and Giordi Passlow whose families have been touched by the disease – it made the event very special,” he said.

The event raised $1000 on the day through the sausage sizzle and donations.

“Over $1000 on the day alone (was raised) and more than $7500 all up,” Mr Hoskins said.

“We would certainly love to do it bigger and better next year.

“The Broken Hill community is always amazing at supporting these events. Special thanks go to Tim Gimbert Images, McLeod’s Bakery and The Y’s Men who were integral to the success of the day.”
