Black tie ball helps doctors fly high

FOR over 60 years, the Royal Flying Doctor Service Broken Hill’s Women’s Auxiliary have hosted the Flying Doctor Ball to fundraise for the organisation, with this year’s event being held at the Civic Centre on Saturday night.

Chief executive officer for the South East Section, Greg Sam, was in attendance and said this year’s ball was as successful as ever.

“This was my 11th black tie ball with the Auxiliary,” he said.

“I think it was as good as any. Attendance was great and the community really support well.”

The ball is often held at the Radford Pavilion at the racecourse when it coincides with Agfair, but on the years between it moves locations, Mr Sam said.

Though he doesn’t live in Broken Hill, Mr Sam said he visits often and always tries to coincide his visits with the ball.

“I try to coincide my regular visits with some of our major events,” he said.

“Certainly the black tie ball is very high on that priority for us.”

Mr Sam said the ball is the major fundraising event for the Broken Hill RFDS, and brings together locals and those who don’t live in the region but might work with the Broken Hill RFDS.

“It’s a very direct way to support the Auxiliary and support us,” he said.

“So those who live in Broken Hill attend, but also those who work and don’t live in Broken Hill but work out of the base, get an opportunity to engage with the locals.

“It’s so valuable to our service because it continues that relationship between us and the community and it gives that sort of sense of shared focus on giving back into the Broken Hill and regional community.

“I think the community also enjoys the fact that it’s an opportunity to frock up!”
