Santa arrives in town in a Moke

SANTA waved to pedestrians and cafe-goers on Saturday morning as he drove down Oxide Street in his tiny red Moke.

He was accompanied by more than sixty motorcyclists as part of the annual Ulysses Toy Run, which sees donations and toys collected to be distributed through Lifeline to children in Broken Hill, Menindee, Wilcannia and Tibooburra.

Toy Run organiser Wayne Orr said he was relieved that Santa’s Moke didn’t break down this year after an unfortunate turn of events last year that saw it unable to drive in any direction other than to the left.

The ride ended at Sturt Park where locals gathered for a free sausage sizzle, train ride and merry-go-round.

Mr Orr, who has played in the Barrier Industrial Union Band for some sixty years, said their performance in the park on Saturday was the first time in about fifty years that the Park’s rotunda has hosted live music.

He said the park saw hundreds of residents turn up to celebrate the festivities, and the band even climbed aboard the train to play Christmas tunes to passengers.
