Emus feather fundraising nest

LOCAL club the Outback Emus began when a squad of 22 local cricketers known as the Outback Emus travelled to England to compete over the summer of 1991.

Some 33 years later, the club has remained united to fundraise for junior sports and talented young athletes throughout Broken Hill.

Member Wayne Pavlich said that the club had raised roughly $250,000 over the last three decades.

“We have two major fundraising events annually, an Ambrose golf day and mystery box trifecta for the Melbourne Cup,” Mr Pavlich said.

“We fundraise for a range of different things, for example when cricket evolved and helmets came in we bought all the helmets for the local teams. But we support every sport, not just cricket!”

Mr Pavlich said as well as backing local sporting teams, the club also offers sponsorship to particularly skilled players who might need financial support to achieve their sporting goals.

“For example if a player is going to compete at state trials, the club can approach us for sponsorship,” he said.

The Emus also give a local sporting athlete sponsorship through their annual Pursuit of Excellence award.

This year’s Silver City Swim Club’s Pursuit of Excellence Award recipients were Scarlett Molloy and Veniece Coorey.

Some notable former winners include women’s cricketer Sam Betts, Aussie Rules player Mitch Henderson and swimmers Ellysia Oldsen and Kalyce Pressler.

Silver City Swim Club’s events coordinator Angela Oldsen said The Emus have continued to support the club and swimmers.

“Personally, my family is forever grateful for the tremendous support they provided to my daughter, Ellysia, who went on to win several Australian Open National Titles and also represented Australia overseas at various World Cups,” she said.
