Park works hold public picnic

LANDCARE’S larger-than-life regeneration project, Imperial Lakes Nature Park, held a picnic last Saturday to showcase the space’s progress since its purchase in early 2023.

The Picnic in Nature event was supported by local community associations such as Broken Hill Community Credit Union and the Rotary Club of Broken Hill.

Landcare volunteers were also in attendance, with many arriving early for the organisation’s weekly working bee held at 9am every Saturday.

Local Landcare co-

ordinator Melanie Gates helped to organise the event.

“I’m excited to see different people come out here and just really relax and go ‘oh we forgot that these lakes are even here’ because it was closed for so long,” she said.

“It’s just a reminder that there is this beautiful oasis right on the outskirt of Broken Hill.

“We really are focused on creating a fun supportive culture of volunteers.

“Lots of people have

memories of swimming and boating in this lake so we love to hear all their stories.”

Susie Williamson enjoyed the space and said the park had “really good potential”.

“They’ve put a playground in and that’s something we can use regularly and be a part of nature rather than just going to the normal playgrounds in town,” she said.

“It will be good once they get a few more of the main buildings done.

“I think they’ve done a lot of work in the time they’ve been here though.”
