A CONVOY of 500 people in more than 200 cars each worth less than $1500 travelled through Broken Hill last Sunday.
Raising funds for cancer research, the visitors were part of this year’s Spring Shitbox Rally from Bendigo to Townsville.
The Friday Fillies, a duo from Jamestown, South Australia, have joined the rally in their $700 Holden Commodore since 2019.
Margie Simpson and Leanne Beyer said they were inspired to take part so they could help to fundraise after both experienced loss due to cancer.
“To be able to do something to help research, maybe there’s something out there they can find that will help,” Ms Beyer said.
The Fillies said they enjoyed catching up with other rally competitors each year, and loved the community spirit of the event.
“You don’t have to know how to change a tyre or check the engine, because there’s a support team and there are wonderful people in your buddy group to help,” Ms Beyer said.
“You’re never left alone, we travel the entire week in our buddy groups, and if one needs to stop, we all stop.”
Cars in a buddy group dial in to the same radio frequency to be able to communicate throughout the rally.
Ms Beyer said she encouraged everyone to join a future Shitbox Rally event.
“If you have a chance to do it, do it,” she said.
The rally visited Pooncarie last Saturday night and the Fillies said they were thrilled to have a night camping on green grass before the rest of the trip, where they will camp on red dirt as they travel through the outback.
Rally participants were expected to arrive in Townsville on Saturday, and had raised more than $2.2 million for The Cancer Council as of earlier this week.
