Attards’ extended hours approved

A DEVELOPMENT application by a local trucking company has been approved by Broken Hill City Council.

Attards Transport Service applied to have the company’s hours updated in November last year.

The matter went before December’s Council meeting, with a member of the public getting up to speak about the hours, noise, and general disruption from the business.

“I have objections to the proposed extension,” resident Ayla Wright said. “Based on a history of non-compliance with current council approvals, documented disturbances which affect the resident’s quality of life.”

Ms Wright also raised the question of the enforcement mechanisms and wanted clarification on the compliance with the Environmental Protection Authority and council regulations.

“I urge that this application is rejected in the interest of community welfare,” she said.

At that time councillors was unable to vote on the matter, as two councillors left the chambers due to conflicts of interest, leaving council without a quorum.

The matter went back to last week’s January meeting were there were no speakers from the public.

Council, with the exception of Cr Michael Boland who declared an interest, voted to approve the application.

Attards now has operation hours of 7am to 9pm Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm Saturday and Sunday.

Cr Elaine Gillet said it was important to help small businesses in Broken Hill.

Cr Bob Algate said the new hours were reasonable and the business was located in the industrial area of the city.

“Attard’s were moved from Patton Street and relocated to this area for the purpose of not being in a residential area,” he said. “They are not a noisy business at all.”

Mayor Cr Tom Kennedy said all development applications have the potential to affect neighbouring properties and decisions are not made lightly.
